Overview In this Senior Underwriting Specialist role, you drive profitable growth for high hazard product liability by underwriting and selling new and renewal accounts. You'll work within the Specialty GL team to apply advanced technical and analytical skills, using internal and external data to shape risk decisions. You will manage an assigned, complex book, coordinate with cross-functional partners, and guide pricing and risk selection. This opportunity offers hybrid/remote work with travel and centers on expanding Hanover's appetite while delivering disciplined risk management.
Responsibilities- Identify, underwrite, and solicit new and renewal accounts aligned with portfolio appetite
- Apply underwriting concepts: risk selection, exposure and hazard identification, coverage implications, and loss analysis
- Provide clear rating instructions for quotes and ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines
- Manage a high-complexity portfolio to meet premium, profitability, and retention targets
- Coordinate with other Hanover departments and sales teams to drive growth and balanced portfolio
- Negotiate with agents, maintain relationships, and present to clients
- Leverage claims and loss control to demonstrate technical expertise and service
- Stay informed on state regulations, market trends, and pricing factors
Key requirements- Bachelor or equivalent experience
- 5-7+ years underwriting experience
- 5-7+ years driving agency relationships for profitable new and renewal business
- Strong problem-solving, prioritization, and multi-project management
- Ability to adapt quickly, influence others, and act as a change advocate
- Mentor for less experienced underwriters; supports training
- Effective communication with internal and external partners; capable of influencing outcomes
