Overview

In this role, you will provide legal guidance and claim expertise within Travelers' Bond & Specialty Insurance team. You'll analyze and resolve complex claims, advise underwriting colleagues, and manage outside counsel within litigation plans and budgets. You'll help shape coverage interpretations, settlements, and recovery strategies while supporting cross-functional initiatives. The position offers exposure to high-stakes professional liability and opportunities to influence underwriting and claim outcomes at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze, investigate, and resolve BSI claims with moderate supervision
  • Prepare reports on loss development, exposure, reserve adjustments, and coverage issues
  • Manage outside counsel, including litigation plans and budgets
  • Communicate significant claim exposures to underwriting
  • Develop recovery opportunities with Recovery Management Unit
  • Draft coverage opinions with case law and participate in mediations, settlements, and depositions
  • Support underwriting marketing, broker visits, and risk mitigation seminars
  • Monitor market conditions and draft reference materials for underwriting and claims teams
  • Obtain and maintain adjuster licenses
Key requirements
  • Five or more years of relevant legal or claim handling experience
  • Strong decision-making and negotiation within authority
  • Strong verbal and written communication for coverage determinations
  • Time management and ability to handle multiple priorities with attention to detail
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with colleagues, customers, and partners
  • Bachelor's Degree; Juris Doctorate Degree; licensed to practice law in working jurisdiction
  • Two years of relevant legal experience

  • Negotiation of settlements; drafting releases and NDAs
  • Litigation management with outside counsel
