Overview

As Department Administrator you will steer operations, finances, and people for the Department of Bioethics & Humanities. You will partner with the Chair and UW Medicine leadership to ensure efficient, compliant, and impactful support across education, research, and clinical ethics services. You will shape budgeting, staff management, and policy alignment to advance ethical reflection and action within science, medicine, and society. This is a strategic, hands-on role at a university medical center with broad collaboration and meaningful impact.

Responsibilities
  • Operations management to ensure day-to-day and programmatic needs are met, including staff supervision and cross-functional coordination
  • Financial management of $2M annual budget, including budgeting, compliance, and reporting
  • Human resources management in partnership with shared services for faculty and staff needs
  • Research management support for grants, IRB, and compliance, and coordination with post-award services
  • Compliance and risk management, policy interpretation, and safeguarding information and resources
  • Strategic planning and change management to align department policies with UW and SoM requirements
  • Facilities management and vendor/partnership development to advance department goals
  • Marketing, branding, and public engagement planning for department programs
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the department
  • Liaison with UW Medicine Dean's Office and other departments on administrative matters
Key requirements
  • Management-level administrative experience in a research institution or academic medical center
  • Strong financial operations, budgeting, financial analysis, and strategic planning
  • Experience with large, structured personnel systems and leadership/communication skills
  • Ability to address complex administrative issues with diplomacy
  • Functional understanding of research grant administration
