Overview

Join Southland Industries as an Estimator to prepare budgets and detailed estimates for medium to large projects. You will analyze drawings, perform material take-offs with specialized software, and price units while flagging potential issues to the manager. You'll collaborate with Lead/Chief Estimator to finalize the FEB, present bids to executives, and generate project-review reports. You will train junior estimators and share best practices in a fast-paced, employee owned environment that values growth and impact.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare preliminary budgets and detailed estimates for medium to large projects
  • Analyze drawings and perform material take-offs using software for unit pricing
  • Discuss potential issues with estimates with the manager
  • Red-line documents and assist in FEB finalization with Lead/Chief Estimator
  • Present bids to Project Executives and Project Managers
  • Generate and interpret reports for project reviews
  • Transfer information into final review format and build FEB for review
  • Participate in client interview meetings
  • Mentor less-experienced estimators and stay current with best practices
Key requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management or Engineering preferred, or trade school or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience (not mandatory)
  • Minimum 5 years' relevant experience including managing people
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems
  • Strong ability to read and understand specifications and drawings
  • Strong knowledge of construction costs and principles
  • Strong ability to perform mathematical calculations and apply fractions, percentages, ratios and prorations
  • Ability to translate concepts into images and apply design principles
  • Strong drafting skills
  • Strong Excel and Word skills
  • Strong knowledge of Quick Pen Auto Bid Mechanical and Sheet Metal Estimating software
  • Strong verbal and written communication
