Job Summary
TruBlu HR Solutions is seeking an experienced Histology Technician for a 13-week contract opportunity with potential for permanent hire at a leading pediatric healthcare organization in Houston, TX.
The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of paid Histology experience with strong technical skills in tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, routine staining, and slide preparation. Quality and accuracy are prioritized over speed, with excellent embedding and cutting skills.
Responsibilities
- Validate specimen identification and verify the appropriateness of specimen type and size.
- Prioritize specimen workload according to established handling protocols and turnaround times.
- Process tissue specimens using automated tissue processors and appropriate processing programs.
- Embed tissue specimens and perform paraffin sectioning using a microtome.
- Produce high-quality sections at the required thickness and quantity.
- Perform routine and special staining procedures, including AFB, MSN, Gram, and ORO stains.
- Coverslip, label, and distribute slides for pathologist interpretation.
- Assist with liver biopsies and fine needle aspirations.
- Retrieve fresh specimens from various laboratory and clinical areas.
- Assist with cryostat and Electron Microscopy specimens as needed.
- Perform technical and specimen-related inquiries.
- Troubleshoot processing and specimen issues.
- Maintain quality and accuracy throughout all stages of histology processing.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of paid Histology experience.
- HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification.
- Associate degree in Science, Histology, or related field.
- Working knowledge of:
- Paraffin tissue sectioning
- Tissue processing
- Tissue embedding
- Microtomy
- Routine histology staining
- Basic special stains
- Ability to operate tissue processors, stainers, embedding units, cryostats, microscopes, and centrifuges.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to specimen quality.
- Ability to communicate effectively and exercise independent judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hospital laboratory experience.
- Reference laboratory experience.
- Experience with special stains.
- Frozen section experience.
- Non-GYN cytology processing experience.
- Experience with pediatric or complex laboratory specimens.
