Position Overview
We are seeking a Psychiatry Physician for a long-term locum opportunity in San Jose, California. The physician will provide psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and ongoing mental health care for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The ideal candidate must be comfortable treating a broad age range, from age 5 through adults. This position is not suitable for adult-only psychiatrists.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and mental status examinations.
- Diagnose and treat patients according to current DSM standards.
- Provide ongoing medication management.
- Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, when clinically appropriate.
- Review laboratory results, diagnostic studies, and consultations.
- Develop individualized mental health treatment plans.
- Provide follow-up psychiatric care.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation.
- Collaborate with medical directors, nurses, therapists, clinicians, and case managers.
- Provide guidance and consultation to other providers as appropriate.
- Educate and counsel families and caregivers regarding diagnoses and treatment.
- Complete required legal, court-related, and clinical documentation.
- Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
Patient Population
The physician will work primarily with patients who have developmental/intellectual disabilities and co-occurring mental health conditions.
Common diagnoses may include:
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression
- Intermittent explosive disorder
- Disruptive mood disorders
- OCD
- Schizoaffective disorder
- Bipolar disorder
- Other psychiatric conditions associated with developmental disabilities
A small portion of the work may involve JV-220 forms.
Patient Volume
During a typical 7.5-hour clinical day, the physician may see approximately 6 10 patients, depending on the mix of new psychiatric evaluations and routine follow-up appointments.
The schedule is approximately 16 hours per week and can be negotiated.
Qualifications
- MD or DO
- Psychiatry training
- Ability to treat patients age 5+ through adults
- Experience or willingness to work with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities
- Authorized to prescribe controlled substances
- Eligible for Medi-Cal/Medicare certification
- Strong clinical documentation and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry preferred, but not required
- California medical licensure/eligibility as applicable
