We are seeking at least 2 Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants for locum coverage across two hospital Emergency Departments in Rhode Island , beginning November 2026. APPs will work directly alongside Emergency Medicine physicians and remain dedicated to the Emergency Department throughout each shift.
Assignment Details
- Projected Start Date: November 15, 2026
- At least 2 APPs anticipated
- Coverage across 2 hospital Emergency Departments
- Approximately 55,000 combined annual ED visits
- No rounding outside of the Emergency Department
Schedule
- APP shifts: 8 hours
- Site 1: Approximately 16 APP coverage hours per day
- Site 2: Approximately 8 APP coverage hours per day
- Additional on-call APP support may be available from existing staff
- Physicians provide approximately 30 hours of coverage per day at each site
Practice Setting
- Emergency Medicine
- Hospital-based Emergency Departments
- Meditech EMR
- Limited resident rotations
- APPs work alongside attending physicians
Patient Volume
- APPs typically see approximately 1.5 2 patients per hour
- Higher volumes may be possible when managing lower-acuity patients
- Site 1: Approximately 33,000 annual ED visits / 85 encounters per day
- Site 2: Approximately 22,000 annual ED visits / 69 encounters per day
Clinical Responsibilities
- Evaluate and manage Emergency Department patients
- Wound care management
- Orthopedic evaluation, diagnosis, and management of injuries
- Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic testing, including laboratory and radiology studies
- Assist attending physicians with procedures as necessary
- Remain in the Emergency Department throughout the shift
- No inpatient rounding responsibilities
- Complete documentation by the end of each shift
Support Staff
- Emergency Medicine physicians onsite
- APPs work alongside attending physicians
- Additional APP coverage varies by location
- Limited resident support
- Additional on-call APP may be available as needed
Requirements
- Physician Assistant
- Emergency Medicine experience preferred
- Comfortable independently evaluating ED patients while collaborating with attending physicians
- Able to manage approximately 1.5 2+ patients per hour depending on acuity
- Clean professional history preferred
- Specific Rhode Island license, certification, and DEA requirements have not yet been provided
Ideal Candidate
An experienced Emergency Medicine PA comfortable working in a busy hospital Emergency Department, managing 1.5 2+ patients per hour , performing wound and orthopedic care, ordering appropriate diagnostic testing, and assisting physicians with procedures.
