Job description

Description

A 9-1-1 Telecommunicator plays a critical role within emergency response services by serving as the vital link between the public and first responders. This position is responsible for receiving emergency calls, assessing situations quickly and accurately, and dispatching the appropriate emergency personnel to ensure public safety. As the first point of contact in emergency situations, the telecommunicator must maintain composure under pressure and provide clear, concise communication to both callers and responders.

Responsibilities and Scope

The primary duty of the 9-1-1 Telecommunicator is to answer emergency calls promptly and gather essential information, including the nature and location of the emergency. They must accurately enter data into computer-aided dispatch systems and relay instructions to callers to assist them until help arrives. The telecommunicator coordinates with police, fire, medical, and other emergency services to deploy resources efficiently, prioritizing calls based on urgency and severity. Additionally, this role involves monitoring radio traffic, maintaining records of calls and dispatches, and providing support to emergency personnel as needed. The telecommunicator must adhere to strict protocols and confidentiality standards while managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Profile and Expectations

The ideal candidate for the 9-1-1 Telecommunicator position is someone who demonstrates strong communication skills, quick decision-making, and the ability to remain calm and focused in stressful situations. Previous experience in emergency services or a related field is beneficial but not required. Candidates should possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with specialized training or certification in emergency communications considered an asset. Excellent listening skills, empathy, attention to detail, and proficiency with computer systems are essential. The role requires a commitment to public service, reliability, and the capacity to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
