Job description

School Bus Driver (Transportation)

Provides safe and timely transportation of students by:

  • Transporting students to and from school, field trips and other school-related activities
  • Operating a school bus safely along assigned routes, ensuring timely pick-up and drop-off of students
  • Maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the bus, enforcing school district policies and safety protocol and procedures
  • Conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the bus is in proper working condition, reporting any maintenance concerns as necessary
  • Staying informed of emergency procedures and responding appropriately in the event of an accident, breakdown or in other emergency situations
  • Adhering to all federal, state and local traffic laws and school district policies, including those related to student transportation
  • Maintaining clear and professional communication with administrators, school staff, parents, and students regarding transportation-related matters
  • Maintaining accurate records of vehicle inspections, attendance, and incidents that occur during transport
  • Exhibiting patience, professionalism and reliability while transporting students of all ages

Maintains a cooperative and professional relationship with staff and supervisors by:

  • Establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work day
  • Effectively communicating with those contacted in the course of the work day exhibiting tact, patience and courtesy

Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of any information regarding students, staff and all job-related matters.

Demonstrates understanding of and compliance with confidentiality practices and policies.

Works with moderate supervision both independently and as a member of a team.

Other job-related duties as required by the Transportation Supervisor and/or the Routing Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Licensure:
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Safe driving record with no evidence of the following:
      • More than one moving traffic violation within any 12-month period of the preceding 36 months
      • Any conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs within the preceding 36 months
      • Any conviction resulting in mandatory revocation or suspension of a driver's license in the previous five (5) years
  • Valid MT driver's license required
  • Valid MT Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements preferred
  • Satisfactory medical examination report on an approved Department of Transportation document, completed and signed by a licensed physician
  • First Aid and CPR certification upon hire
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of five (5) years of licensed driving experience
    • Prior transportation experience or driving a commercial vehicle is preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of state and local laws and regulations involving pupil transportation
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to pass drug and alcohol screening
    • Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and effective manner
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
    • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
    • Ability to effectively communicate with staff, the public and others in a polite and professional manner
    • Ability and willingness to work independently and effectively as part of a team
    • Ability to interpret and effectively apply rules & regulations and policies & procedures as required
    • Ability to understand and apply complex rules and policies
    • Knowledge of and ability to use positive problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality of employment and student matters
    • Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities
    • Ability to plan well and demonstrate flexibility with work responsibilities
    • Demonstrated ability to act with initiative and good judgement

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works along and with students, working both inside and outside. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to noisy. In performing the essential functions of the job, the employee may experience stressful conditions.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, bend, walk. The employee is frequently required to twist at neck and waist, and reach. The employee will also have repetitive use of hands, wrists and forearms. Must have an adequate range of motion in upper extremities. Specific vision abilities of this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds.

Mental/Motor Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee often performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). Guidance and reinforcement are usually unavailable. The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee is frequently involved in social interactions requiring oral communication.
