A sheet metal duct work installer is a specialized tradesperson responsible for assembling, and installing the ductwork systems used for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) in commercial, or industrial buildings.

Core Responsibilities

  • Fabrication & Assembly: Measuring, cutting, and shaping sheet metal (galvanized steel, aluminum, copper) into duct components using specialized tools like shears, brakes, and plasma cutters.
  • Installation: Hanging and securing ductwork, including air ducts, exhaust systems, and fittings, using hangers, straps, and supports according to design plans.
  • Joining & Sealing: Connecting duct sections by welding, bolting, riveting, or soldering and sealing joints to ensure airtight and energy-efficient systems.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Reading and analyzing architectural blueprints and technical diagrams to determine precise layouts and material requirements.
  • Maintenance & Repair: Troubleshooting, repairing, and cleaning existing ductwork systems to improve airflow and energy efficiency.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Technical Proficiency: Expert use of hand and power tools (snips, drills, hammer drills) and metal fabrication machinery.
  • Mathematical Skills: Strong arithmetic for converting measurements, calculating load requirements, and ensuring precise fits.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials (often 50-75 lbs), climb ladders, and work in confined or high spaces.
  • Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with industry health and safety standards, often including OSHA certifications.
