Job Description
TerraPower, LLC. is seeking a highly motivated and resourceful Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. In this role, you will create design solutions for the conceptual and preliminary design development of various reactor core components, reactor structures, and Nuclear Island components for the Natrium Generation IV Reactor. Candidates must have extensive experience in equipment design. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will report to the Core Component Design Manager. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers and scientists focused on developing the design of next-generation advanced nuclear reactors.
Tasks
Coordinate and utilize inputs and requirements from Engineering and Project teams to produce equipment and components design solutions, including drawings, models, and specifications.
Perform planning for design activities and manage execution to the established plans.
Propose and develop tests required to validate functional and performance design requirements.
Perform scoping analysis and trade studies for design options.
Interface with cross functional team for design and analysis activities.
Perform engineering reviews of team members products.
Interface with engineers and subcontractors, providing direction and mentoring.
Support continuous learning and application of nuclear industry best practices to maintain the highest quality of engineering design and proactively identify process change/enhancement opportunities.
Key Qualifications and Skills
Education: B.S. degree in Mechanical engineering or equivalent preferred.
Minimum of five years of equipment / component design experience; relevant M.S. and Doctorate degrees may be credited for up to two or four years of experience respectively.
Experience with 3D CAD, SolidWorks preferred.
Experience with design of experiments with an emphasis on product testing.
Experience in finite element stress analysis, mechanical analysis methods, first principles calculations.
Familiarity in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
Excellent writing and communication skills.
Strong analytical/problem solving skills, creative thinker.
Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems.
Ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently during a given work week.
Excellent attention to detail.

The Ideal Candidate:
Experience or familiarity with the rules of ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code Section III Division 5.
Design experience in the nuclear industry with core assemblies is highly desirable.
Experience with nuclear industry operation, DOE and NRC regulations
Knowledge of neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and/or structural analysis.
Ability to lead multidisciplinary design activities
Experience in finite element stress analysis using ANSYS and first principles calculations.
Experience with writing test requirements documents and developing nuclear product test campaigns.
Experience with manufacturing and methodology, especially in first article productions.
Experience with technical evaluation, review, and nonconformance evaluation of vendors and suppliers.
