CNC Machine Set Up/Operator

AtWork Group

Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States

Job description

The CNC Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and accurate operation of our HAAS CNC lathes and mills to produce custom metal components to print. Working from shop drawings and engineering specifications, this role supports the fabrication of one-of-a-kind architectural metalwork. The ideal candidate is a skilled machinist who takes pride in close-tolerance work, can operate both CNC and manual equipment, and thrives in a custom-fabrication environment where no two jobs are exactly alike.
  • Set up and operate late-model HAAS CNC lathes and mills to machine parts to engineering drawings and shop specifications
  • Load and execute CNC programs; make proven program edits and tool offsets as needed to hold print tolerances
  • Select and install tooling, fixtures, and work-holding setups; verify alignment and clearances prior to running
  • Perform in-process inspection using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges)
  • Document setup sheets and first-article inspection records for repeatability on future runs

Manual Machining
  • Operate manual mills and lathes for prototype work, one-off parts, and operations not suited to CNC
  • Perform turning, facing, boring, threading, milling, drilling, and tapping as required by the job
  • Recognize when manual methods are more efficient than CNC setup time on short-run or simple geometry parts

Quality & Safety
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and material specifications
  • Maintain first-part and in-process quality records, flag non-conformances to the Shop Manager promptly
  • Keep machines, tooling, and work areas clean and properly maintained, report maintenance needs immediately
  • Follow all shop safety procedures, PPE requirements, and safe work practices

Collaboration
  • Coordinate with the Shop Manager and other fabricators to sequence CNC work with weld, grind, and assembly operations
  • Communicate material needs, tooling shortages, or drawing questions before they cause delays
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to setup time, scrap reduction, and process consistency

Qualifications

Required
  • 3+ years of CNC machine operation experience - HAAS controls experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to set up and run both CNC lathes and mills from drawings
  • Proficiency in precision measurement and inspection techniques
  • Ability to make minor program edits and adjust offsets at the machine control
  • Experience operating manual mills and lathes
  • Strong blueprint and GD&T reading skills
  • Self-motivated with a high standard for quality and fit-to-purpose craftsmanship

Preferred
  • Experience machining non-ferrous metals including aluminum, brass, and bronze
  • Exposure to Fusion 360 or other CAM software (programming skills a plus)
  • Experience in a custom or job-shop fabrication environment
  • Vocational/technical training in machining or manufacturing technology

Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on shop position. Must be able to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work safely around machine tools, cutting fluids, and metal stock. Hearing and eye protection are required in the shop environment.

Compensation & Benefits

Client offers competitive wages commensurate with experience, along with a full benefits package for full-time employees:
  • Health insurance (medical, dental, and vision)
  • Life, Hospital Indemnity, Accident and Critical Illness insurance available
  • SIMPLE IRA plan with Company match
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Short-Term Disability coverage (Company paid)
  • Stable, Monday- Friday schedule in a climate-controlled shop
  • A team environment where skilled craftspeople are valued and respected
