Sub Arc Welder - Girth Seam

Night Shift: 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM
Pay: $20.00 - $26.00/hr DOE
Job Summary
We are hiring an experienced Sub Arc (SAW) Welder - Girth Seam to join our production team at North Shore Steel.
This role involves performing full-circumference welds on large-diameter pipe and cylindrical products using Submerged Arc Welding systems. You will play a key role in ensuring weld integrity, consistency, and code compliance on critical structural and pressure-related products.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) equipment for girth seam welding
- Perform full rotation welds on large pipe/cylindrical components
- Set and adjust welding parameters to maintain proper penetration and bead quality
- Execute clean starts, stops, and tie-ins with minimal defects
- Monitor weld consistency throughout rotation and adjust as needed
- Read and interpret WPS, blueprints, and weld symbols
- Perform carbon arc gouging and grinding for repair work when needed
- Prepare and verify weld fit-up and surface condition
- Maintain welding equipment and follow all safety procedures
- Work closely with Quality and Production teams
Qualifications
- Experience with Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) required
- Strong understanding of girth seam / rotational welding
- Ability to maintain consistent weld quality on full-circumference welds
- Experience with starts, stops, and tie-ins
- Ability to read blueprints and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
- Familiarity with AWS, ASME, or API standards preferred
- Strong attention to detail and quality-focused mindset
- Reliable and able to work 12-hour night shifts
Preferred Experience
- Large-diameter pipe girth welding experience
- API or pressure vessel environments
- NDE (RT/UT) inspection environments
- Tandem electrode SAW experience
Physical Requirements
- Lift up to 50 lbs regularly
- Stand for long periods on concrete/industrial surfaces
- Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and manual handling
- Work in high-heat, noisy, industrial environments
- Must meet visual and hearing safety requirements
